The Right Way To Wash Fruits & Vegetables Before Cooking

We often get confused as to how we should wash fruits and vegetables after purchasing them from the market. Whether to wash them before storing them in the refrigerator or wash them just before eating them. And because of this, some people wash the fruits and veggies in soap water which is detrimental to health. As such, there is no evidence to prove that coronavirus can spread through fruits and vegetables. But, to ensure absolute cleanliness, they should be washed thoroughly with natural ingredients prepared in your kitchen.

Steps to Wash your Fruits & Vegetables the Right way:

1.The Basic Way

To begin with, you must wash your fruits and vegetables in flowing water for about 3-5 minutes. Now, take a large bowl and fill it with warm water. Put those washed fruits and vegetables in the bowl for 20 minutes straight. Then, keep them in the refrigerator and use them according to your needs.

2.Baking Powder

Here is one way to properly wash the groceries :

  • Take a solution of equal parts of baking powder and vinegar in a large utensil.

  • Fill it with hot water.

  • Stir well and soak your fruits and vegetables in this solution for about 20-30 minutes.

  • Now wash them. This will destroy the germs present on them effectively. When they are air-dried, stack them in your refrigerator and use them.

3.Turmeric: the magic potion

Take a tablespoon of salt, turmeric, and vinegar and squeeze a lemon. Mix them in hot water. Add this mixture to a large appliance and soak your fruits and vegetables in it for about 20 minutes. Then wash them with normal water. This way, they will get rid of germs and bacteria.

4.Scrubber method

Another right way to wash fruits & vegetables is by scrubbing. Take carrots and potatoes, and use a scrubber to wash them. Then soak them in chilly water for 2 minutes. Dry them off and use them later.

5.Green leafy veggies

For cleaning leafy greens, simply put them under running tap water. Then transfer them to a large bowl filled with ice-cold water with a pinch of salt in it. This will assure that your vegetables are sanitized and their shelf life will also be increased.

Conclusion

Food hygiene is an essential health habit to cultivate. Washing fresh produce reduces the number of germs and residues on the surface that may make you sick. Many people are questioning whether more vigorous washing approaches, such as using soap or industrial cleaners on fresh produce, are safer in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This isn't recommended or required, and it may even be risky, according to health experts. Until feeding, most fruits and vegetables can be sufficiently washed with cool water and light friction. Produce with more layers and surface area can be cleaned more deeply by swishing it in a bowl of cool water. Fresh fruits and vegetables have a range of beneficial nutrients and can be consumed as long as proper cleaning techniques are used.
