  1. Jungli Jalebi

The spiraling green-pink pods of jungli jalebi (or kodukkapuli) contain about 6-10 shining black seeds wrapped in a dense, sweet, edible pulp, resembling the Indian sweet Jalebi. The tangy seeds are used in curries. Besides, the pulp can be eaten raw or made into a drink similar to lemonade.

Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal are the states where it can be found in abundance.

The pulp and bark are hemostatic and astringent. The pulp and bark are used in general to treat gum ailments, toothaches, and hemorrhages. The bark extract is often used to heal dysentery, chronic diarrhea, and tuberculosis. The ground seed also helps in treating ulcers.

2. Carambola (Star Fruit)

This fruit with its waxy skin makes it a perfect preserve for pickles. Although the unripe ones are green and sour in taste, the ripened ones have a distinct yellow colour and they are sweet with slightly brown ribs.

3. Langsah/ Lotka (Langsat)

Langsah is a small, translucent, orb-shaped fruit that is quite sour when unripe, but becomes sweet when ripe with a taste similar to a bittersweet grapefruit. It is cultivated only in selected regions in East and South India, especially on the Nilgiri hills.

Langsat is a fruit rich in nutrients that includes proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and dietary fiber. It is also a rich source of vitamin A, riboflavin, and thiamine which are vital for many functions of the body.

Scholars believe that India’s migrating Buddhist monks carried this fruit with them to China in 400 AD, which explains its name. It is grown in Northeastern India. In traditional medicine, the dried, sliced peel of immature fruit is often prescribed as a tonic.

5. Mangustaan (Mangosteen)

This tropical fruit is fragrant and its leathery purple-maroon shell surrounds a moist, snow-white, and sweet fleshy interior. The flavor of the fruit is mellow and earthy which resembles a mango in taste. Interestingly this is the national fruit of Thailand. They mostly flourish in the Southern parts of India.
